Vespertine means "blooming or coming alive in the evening". In the great indoors, away from natural light, it's forever evening, and this album, by Björk's own admission, is "very much about being alone in your house". Partly recorded in a mountain hut in Iceland, it's constructed from found sounds (crunching snow, shuffling cards, etc), and only the most twinkling of instruments (harps, music boxes, clavichords). Bjork's voice will always provoke a love/hate response, but Vespertine is her most easily listenable album since Debut. SP
