Album: Colin Steele, Stramash, (Gadgemo)
Scottish trumpeter Steele has blended jazz and folk before, but this unorthodox dectet is his most ambitious project yet.
Familiar jazz names like saxophonist Phil Bancroft and pianist Dave Milligan play alongside traditional fiddlers Catriona MacDonald, Mairi Campbell and Aidan O'Rourke, and piper Rory Campbell on catchy, joyful, intricately-textured tunes that, as with "The Recurring Dream", satisfy both head and heart. Those intolerant to shortbread might need small doses.
