Indeed tomorrow night is Burns Night and Adoon Winding Nith (whatever that may mean) is as timely a release as can be imagined, being an 11-track album of simple, unadorned but genuinely pretty Scots-folk settings of the poet's words.
Accompaniments to Smith's breezy voice include guitar, fiddle, mandolin, accordion and piano, but never exceed the needs of the moment; and if comparisons to Eddi Reader's Burns album are inevitable, it does not follow that they are odious.
