Trumpeter Rava, who turns 70 this summer, is enjoying a late bloom.

This NYC studio date with drummer Paul Motian, bassist Larry Grenadier, pianist Stefano Bollani (a regular partner) and saxophonist Mark Turner, while spare and thoughtful in the approved ECM style, is also swingingly jazzy, with the horns a particular pleasure. Ten Rava originals offer simple but satisfying themes, but there's still a bit of rather dull and plinky-plonk improv to grimace through.

Pick of the album: 'Thank You, Come Again': full of jazz nostalgia
