This is Arguelles's 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' album, multi-tracked in a Hamburg studio in the lonely late-night downtime from his NDR Big Band contract.

He's been England's most complete saxophonist for years and his mastery and intelligence are evident throughout, even on experimental pieces using keys as percussion or playing the unfamiliar (to him) bass sax or piccolo. More than half of the 14 racks are astonishingly good, insistent motifs and grooves buoyed up amid an ocean of breath.

Pick of the album: 'Ghana': joyful sounds from the sax chorus
