The leonine Lura's explosive first appearance on a London stage was unforgettable: since then she has established herself as the leading voice among the Cape Verdean singers who have emerged in the great Cesaria Evora's wake.
She likes to mock the cosiness of morna – Cesaria's own infinitely seductive song-form – and she's made a big thing out of reviving her country's other forms, but this record shows her moving closer to Evora's style, swooping lazily down on to the notes, and holding them with the same plangency.
