At the time, veteran bossa nova star Valle's three albums for London's Far Out label between the Nineties and the Noughties seemed pleasant updatings of a classic sound but, however clever the grooves or fashionable the context, ultimately nothing special.

Heard now, though, on this nifty compilation featuring three additional unreleased live recordings, Valle and programmer Roc Hunter's acid-jazz and hip-hop-influenced re-brandings of what was already one of the most rhythmically supple sounds imaginable, comes across as absolutely fantastic: perfect summer-barbie and beach music with no pretensions at all.

Pick of the Album: 'Escape': Valle's groovy scat-singing sounds fantastic
