Like Gotan Project at their best, this Afro-Peruvian outfit takes the rhythmic and melodic forms of its traditional music – which dates back to slavery and Spanish colonial rule – and make something wholly vital and contemporary out them. You can hear the dry rattle of stick on donkey jaw bone, but also a sinuous bass guitar and a sparing use of echo, denoting a love of dub reggae. Guest vocalists come and go, but the best thing about this music are the muscular, idiosyncratic grooves.
Pick of the Album: 'Se Me Van' is a brassy, punchy Afrobeat-flavoured joy
