The Malian diva’s first album for six years is as detailed and sophisticated as it is funky, as progressive as it is traditional, and as sexy as it is graceful and austere.
As usual, all the songs are self-penned, and therefore resonate with political and personal statements. “Donso” includes the enigmatic line “Give me the animal’s liver so I can dedicate myself to humanity/Give me the intestines too so I can belt them around my waist”. Now you wouldn’t get lyrics like that from Beyoncé now, would you.
