At first hearing, this bare-bones duo between star saxophonist Lloyd and the much younger pianist from his regular band can seem like typical old-geezer chamber jazz: amiable but underpowered.

But give it time and the intensity of the music – the Hagar of the title is Lloyd's great-great grandmother, who was sold into slavery – comes through. Closing versions of Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" and Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows" are very moving.
