Album review: Nataly Dawn, How I Knew Her (Nonesuch)
The female half of the Californian Pomplamoose duo, whom you may or may not know for their bracingly quirky covers of pop hits.
Here she is getting the Nonesuch treatment for her own songs: ad hoc, broadly acoustic arrangements with high-end musicians who enjoy other careers plunking with the likes of Bill Frisell. For the most part it works well, provided you can live with Dawn's butter-wouldn't-melt ingenue phrasing and tone.
