Album: Rodrigo y Gabriela, 11:11, (Rubyworks)
Those of us who witnessed the emergence of this Mexican guitar duo 10 years ago knew instantly they would hit the heights.
This new album acknowledges debts to Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Shakti and Paco de Lucia, but what comes over most powerfully is their own inventiveness. Sometimes their style is oddly reminiscent of Kazakh dombra playing, but their symbiotic dexterity is unique. Percussion, piano and even an oud enrich the mix. Catch them live in November.
