Album: Solveig Slettahjell, Antologie (Emarcy/Universal)
Voice, piano, autoharp, synth bleeps... But it's the voice you listen to.
Slettahjell's austere, cottony Nordic mezzo evolved in the parlour and these are her parlour songs. The successes are beautiful: Tom Waits (a cover of her own cover of "Take it With Me"), the Stones ("Wild Horses"), Radiohead ("There There") and Abba ("Winner Takes it All") are fiercely intimate readings and worthy of your best ears. Her wrestles with Gnarls Barkley and Cyndi Lauper less so.
