Singer-songwriter-guitarist Souad Massi is unique in both her background and what she has done with it. An Algerian of Kabyle descent, she began her career with an Algerian rock band, but left the country after a series of death threats. Her music draws on country and western, fado, and Parisian caf styles: her voice has that "covered" Arabic quality, and it oozes husky charm, but it's not tremendously versatile. This live album's real strength lies in the melodies, and in the beguiling accompaniment she gives them on a variety of string instruments, from the oud to the Spanish and Portuguese guitars.
