Taylor Swift, a lion-haired, God-thanking teenager from Pennsylvania, is currently the hottest thing in the US since sliced Obama, and Universal is shifting as many copies of Fearless as possible before she does a Britney.

In the radio-taught warble of an American Idol contestant who makes it to boot camp but no further, she sings self-penned maudlin Nashville pop songs soaked in mild high-school heartache, because even cheerleaders get the blues. Must we throw this hygiene at our kids?

Pick of the album: For a laugh, if nothing else: 'Teardrops on My Guitar'
