Album: The Eagles
Long Road Out of Eden (Mercury)
They can check out any time they like but it seems Henley, Frey, Schmit and Walsh can never leave the Eagles. Their first full-length (a double to boot) in 28 years is everything you would expect from a new Eagles album: beautifully produced and played, at times brilliant but often bloated. There are clunking lyrics from the "guilty of loving you" school; there are 10-minute epics, there are perfunctory driving tunes and there are 9/11 tributes. But there are also incredible harmonies and the odd peaceful, easy-going number that would not feel out of place on that greatest hits. You just can't kill the beast, indeed.
