There's considerable fogey-appeal to audiophile label Chesky's single-mic, tube-driven, real location methodology although it sometimes appears that more attention is paid to the valves than the tunes or the people who play them. 'Cobb's Corner' is a case in point, pairing the rather polite rhythm section of ex-Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Peter Washington and pianist Ronnie Mathews with hot-shot trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who plays with R&B star D'Angelo. The results, while mixed, really do grow on you, with the unusually heated "Book's Bossa" a particular treat.
