Indian percussion wizard Gurtu honours his early work with Don Cherry in an album dedicated to the sound of the trumpet, alternating pieces by Miles, Dizzy and Cherry with original compositions.
What's great is the variety of trumpet-voices, including Nils Petter Molvaer and Ibrahim Maalouf, and the way Gurtu's tablas and percussion weave in and out of their measures. Bass and keyboards can sound a little too muso, but this is superior stuff.
