Album: Various artists, Behind Closed Doors (Kent)

Given the barn-door sized target (soul versions of country songs), there’s a surprising number of misses on this 23-track compilation.

After the disastrous decision to begin with Aaron Neville’s late (1993!) and not very good title track, things recover with Solomon Burke’s heroic “He’ll Have to Go”. Percy Sledge, Tami Lynn, Ann Peebles, Al Green, Millie Jackson – a killing “If You’re Not Back in Love By Monday” – and Brook Benton are the best of the rest.
