What has the Viennese school ever done for jazz? Well, quite a lot really, from Cecil Taylor's knuckle-edged atonality to cool school serialism.
This third album by the dangerously young German trio of pianist Michael Wollny, bassist Eva Kruse and drummer Eric Schaeffer references Webern, Schoenberg and faint, crepuscular echoes of techno to create intensely involving soundscapes that shimmer darkly. Over 13 original compositions, they shift from harsh, percussive free jazz to gently swinging lyricism, eventually rewarding the listener with the semblance of a proper tune.
