The self-cannibalisation of the recording giants has created a wealth of choice in mid-price re-releases, and with Harmonia Mundi joining the game that choice is even more interesting. Flemish conductor Philippe Herreweghe's crisp approach shakes the air of dried flowers from this Victorian fantasy. Playing of such delicacy and brio is a thrill and with the ever-wonderful Sandrine Piau as the soprano soloist, this is an irrestible version of Mendelssohn's perrenial favourite.
