Of all classical music, lieder singing is most prey to faddish interpretations. So the smooth baritone Thomas Quasthoff's outstanding sensitivity to such familiar texts is a joy. Not since Olaf Bär's hey-day has a recording been so unpretentious and heartfelt. A harrowing but ultimately transcendent LP, beautifully accompanied by Zeyen.
