Weekly music agenda: Sting's 'Symphonities,' BBC Proms

Sting's Symphonicities, the companion album to his current international tour with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, is at the top of international pre-order lists leading up to its July 12 international release. On July 16, the major annual BBC Proms festival will present 70 concerts to thousands of "prommers" in London, as plus many more concerts and events in parks and venues across the UK.

Eminem, Jay-Z, Muse, Arcade Fire, The Black Eyed Peas, and The Prodigy will headline Ireland's biggest music festival in 2010. With an average of 80,000 festival-goers per day (approximately 70,000 of whom camp out on the grounds), Oxegen is gaining a reputation as Ireland's version of the UK's legendary Glastonbury festival. Tickets for the concerts plus four days of camping are €244.50; to camp for only the three-night festival, a ticket will cost you €224.50.

Sting's 'Symphonicities'

Symphonicities is the companion CD to Sting's current international tour, a 50-date trek with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra that started in Vancouver on June 2 and ends in Italy in November. The album, which is currently at the top of pre-order charts on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, will include some of the British artist's best-known songs, including "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Roxanne" and "Next To You," as well as songs from Sting's solo career including "Englishman in New York," "I Burn for You," "Why Should I Cry for You," and "She's Too Good For Me," all in orchestral arrangement. The multi-faceted multi-Grammy winner has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide.

BBC Proms

Founded in 1895, the annual BBC Proms consists of more than 70 concerts in London's Royal Albert Hall, a chamber series at Cadogan Hall, educational and children's events, and additional "Proms in the Park" events across the UK. The Proms is known for the phenomenon of "promming" - that is, Proms-goers waiting in long lines for significantly lower-priced tickets to hear concerts from standing areas inside the hall - and for its exuberant and sometimes noisy concert atmosphere. Programming highlights of 2010 include the Mahler Symphony no. 8, Wagner's Die Meistersinger with Bryn Terfel, Verdi's Simon Boccanegra with Plácido Domingo, a full day of Beethoven on July 21, and the annual "Last Night" celebration in Hyde Park. In addition to promming, concert-goers can buy full- or half-season tickets for guaranteed entry.

Salzburg Festival

The oldest and one of the most prestigious festivals in Europe celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2010. Highlights in 2010 will include concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic and featuring pianist Evgeny Kissin, as well as opera productions including Elektra by Richard Strauss, Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, and Alban Berg's Lulu. Also on the program: seven concerts devoted to the music of Johannes Brahms, as well as concerts featuring the music of Schumann, Chopin, and Wolfgang Rihm; and a performance by international stars Rolando Villazón and Hélène Grimaud.

Jonas Brothers international tour begins

Teen heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers are set to make a multi-continent summer concert tour with guest Demi Lovato, beginning July 27 in Dallas, Texas, and continuing through North America, Latin America, and Europe throughout the summer and fall. The brothers will tour in support of the sequel to their film Camp Rock, which has reached more than 137 million viewers. That movie's soundtrack has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide and spent ten weeks in the top ten on the US Billboard 200 chart. The Jonas Brothers' previous tour was among the top-grossing concert tours in 2009, with more than 1.5 million attendees and sold-out shows on three continents.

Fuji Rock

Set on the Naeba Ski Resort, the Fuji Rock Festival is a favorite for its picturesque location. More than 100,000 people attend the annual festival, where they can watch music on seven different stages, the largest of which can accommodate 40,000 people. The 2010 festival will feature Muse, Them Crooked Vultures, Roxy Music, Massive Attack, and more than 100 other artists, most of them from the UK, the US, and Japan. Advance three-day tickets are 39,800 yen, or about €350, and campsite or car pass tickets are an addition 3,000 yen (€26).

Lollapalooza

First launched in 1991 by Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction, Lollapalooza is an iconic American festival with its roots in the alternative music scene. The 2010 festival lineup includes Lady Gaga, Green Day, newly reunited Soundgarden, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and Phoenix. Other acts on the lineup include MGMT, Hot Chip, The Black Keys, The National, Spoon, Devo, Cypress Hill, The New Pornographers, Erykah Badu, Grizzly Bear, and The xx. Three-day passes are $215, while single-day tickets are available for $90 per day. Lollapalooza is an urban festival in Chicago's Grant Park and includes no on-site camping.
