If the Royal Court Young Writers' Festival is about finding voices for the future, they have come up trumps in Michael Wynne, 21-year-old author of The Knocky. His play, which has graduated from the festival to a tour of its own, is a smashing night out in the theatre: it tells a story; it is stock full of wonderful characters, strongly played; it is very funny; and, behind all the knockabout and wit, there is a heartfelt, angry portrait of people struggling to hold onto their self-worth in the face of poverty. A sad indictment of our times, but a little gem for the theatre. SH
