Charlie Watts: A Tribute to Charlie Parker (Continuum 19201). A fine achievement by the Rolling Stones' jazz- loving drummer, who augments his quintet to recreate the controversial 'Bird with Strings' arrangements live at Ronnie Scott's, Birmingham. Bernard Fowler narrates Watts's charming bebop parable, Ode to a High Flying Bird, between the tunes. Both Parker pieces and originals, they feature magnificent solos from the altoist Peter King and the prodigious 18- year-old trumpeter Gerard Presencer, who brilliantly summons the spirits of Gillespie and Navarro.
