Bach: Cello Suites. Mischa Maisky (DG, two CDs). Distinguished 1985 recordings, resonant and thoughtful. Michael White

Lully: Phaeton. Les Musiciens du Louvre/ Minkowski (Erato, CD). A great Versailles spectacle, with which Lully forged 17th-century French opera. MW

Szymanowski: Stabat Mater & Symphony No 3. CBSO & Chorus/Simon Rattle (EMI, CD). Spacious, magisterial, evocative. Award material. MW

Nick Drake: Way to Blue (Island, CD/ tape). Exquisite melancholia: like having the source of a stream in the corner of your room. BT

Boz Scaggs: Some Change (Virgin America, CD/tape). At 50, he's made what may be the comeback album of all time: pared- down, intimate, and showing a wonderfully refined passion. RW
