Sensationalist television may attract criticism, but - as is the case with BBC1's 999 - it often also attracts large audiences. 999, which recreates real-life rescues, has been the most popular non-soap on BBC1 for every week of its run. It opened to an audience of 9.27m, never dipped below 11m and peaked at 12.75m. The opening ceremony of the Olympics peaked at 11.26m. The first part of Prime Suspect was watched by 8.28m even though it was the thriller's third showing.
