Ciaran Carson is one of 10 ten poets on the shortlist for the pounds 5,000 T S Eliot prize. The winner will be announced in January. Carson was born in 1948 in Belfast, where he works for the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He won a Gregory Award in 1976 for his first collection, The New Estate. This poem is taken from First Language (Gallery Books, pounds 5.95).
