James Fenton is the last of the 10 poets on the shortlist for the pounds 5,000 T S Eliot prize, to be announced in January. He was born in Lincoln in 1949, and has combined a career as a literary and political journalist with his work as a poet. He is a regular columnist in the Independent. This poem appears in Out of Danger, published by Penguin at pounds 7.50.
