The Fall (Acropolis, 031-557 6969, 15 Aug). Now the darling of the literary set, Mark E Smith still provides the perfect evening for audiences who like to be treated with anger and contempt.

Jah Wobble and the Invaders of the Heart (Acropolis, 031-557 6969, 16 Aug). Brilliant bass, rhythms of the world and New Age nonsense, all perfectly ingeniously wrapped up in one short Cockney.

American Music Club (Acropolis, 031-557 6969, 30 Aug). The gloomy but groovy guitar band preview their new album, San Francisco, due to be released in September.

Capercaillie (Playhouse, 031-557 2590, 31 Aug). Three off-putting adjectives: Gaelic, political, folk. Still, they're big in Scotland and they don't have beards. Note: The show is not on 1 Sept, despite what it says in the Fringe Programme's listing.

Jools Holland and His Big Band (Queen's Hall, 031-668 2019, 19-28 Aug). The coolest television presenter and ivory-tickler in the world plays boogie-woogie, R&B and jazz with his as-seen-on-TV band.
