BRILLIANT, YOUNG Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes teams up with the Philharmonia Orchestra in Schumann's contemplative but exuberant piano concerto. Vladimir Ashkenazy conducts a programme made up by Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Rachmaninov's too rarely heard Symphonic Dances.

Royal Festival Hall, London SE1 (0171-960 4242) 7.30pm

Favourable reviews have been forthcoming for English National Opera's new production of Donizetti's dramatically colourful Mary Stuart (right), directed by Gale Edwards. Donizetti based his opera on Schiller's play, as opposed to historical fact, but the scenario certainly allows for tumultuous confrontations between Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I, sung by Ann Murray and Susan Parry respectively. Jean-Yves Ossonce conducts.

Coliseum, London WC2
