JUST WHY Boston trio Buffalo Tom (below) remained a cult show while Nirvana and a slew of Seattle bands racked up huge sales is still a mystery to their fans. Now back with their sixth album - the excellent Smitten - they play a one-off UK gig, with music which embraces beautiful flowing melodies and manic intense grinders. The straightahead rock gig of the week, month and possibly year.

The American Pioneers season continues with a rare UK appearance by New York scenester John Zorn. Blurring the line between contemporary improvisation and classical composition, Zorn's re-orchestration of some of his best works will take in all the emotions of bebop, fast metal and even traditional Jewish music.

Barbican, London EC2
