He is known for his cutting remarks as a Strictly Come Dancing judge, but Craig Revel Horwood is set to swap the sequins for the stage and star in musical Annie.

The dancer, choreographer and theatre director, 49, will play drunken, villainous orphanage owner Miss Hannigan in a new production of the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit.

The storyline follows 11-year-old Annie as she lives a “hard knock life” under Miss Hannigan in 1930s New York, during the Great Depression.

Revel Horwood will make his debut at Newcastle's Theatre Royal next summer before touring other UK cities from Bristol to Southhampton.

Past stars to have taken on the role of Miss Hannigan have included Carol Burnett and Kathy Bates, while Cameron Diaz will play the evil character in a film version due out later this year.

Revel Horwood has performed in a range of West End shows before, including Cats, Crazy for You and Miss Saigon.

He returns to the Strictly judging panel this weekend for the start of the live shows, following on from the new series' launch earlier this month.

Celebrities taking part in the dancing competition include Scott Mills, Pixie Lott, Judy Murray, Thom Evans and Gregg Wallace.
