Tony Awards 2016: Winners list in full as Hamilton leads the pack

The Broadway smash won 11 of its historic 16 nominations, though it failed to beat The Producers' record in 2001

Broadway continues to ride strong on its love affair with the smash hit Hamilton, which interlaces hip-hop elements into the traditional musical structure to retell the history of US founding father Alexander Hamilton.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's sensational show followed through with its record-breaking 16 nominations to nab 11 wins on the night; an incredible achievement, though it failed to surpass The Producers' record of 12 wins in 2001. The Humans, The Color Purple, and A View From the Bridge also took away top honours from the night.

Tributes were paid throughout the night to the tragedy of the Orlando shooting; as Lin-Manuel Miranda's acceptance speech took the form of a deeply emotional sonnet in tribute to its victims. "Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside / I sing Vanessa’s symphony. Eliza tells her story. [we] fill the world with music, love, and pride," he concluded.
