Arena: Busby, Stein and Shankly - the Football Men (9.30pm BBC2)

Veteran soccer writer Hugh McIlvanney begins his handsome three-part tribute to the triumviral deities of modern British football management - Matt Busby, Jock Stein and Bill Shankly. All sons of the Scottish coalfields south of Glasgow, each had a spell as a miner (Stein for 13 years) before escaping via football to their destinies with Manchester United, Celtic and Liverpool. The story continues tomorrow (74770).

Film: The Bank Dick (12.45am BBC2) What better way to slip into the Bank Holiday weekend - especially with so much cloying Disney and Riverdance fare around - with some prime late WC Fields. The great man plays Egbert Souse (pronounced Soo-zay - not that anyone's fooled), a barfly slacker who is made a detective when he accidentally foils a bank robbery. One of his best (2367788).
