Game of Thrones: A minor Jaime Lannister prophecy came true in season 8 episode 5

**Spoilers for Game of Thrones season eight, episode five ‘The Bells’ ahead**

The once saviour of Westeros has become the Mad Queen. During the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) burnt down King’s Landing as Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) watched from the Red Keep.

With the city falling, Cersei attempted to escape Dany’s wrath and ended up bumping into Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in the map room – the same map room where they came up with their plan to take over Westeros.

The two lovers/siblings tried to escape but found themselves trapped under the Red Keep. With the ceiling collapsing in, Cersei said: ”Please don’t let me die. I don’t want to die.” They embraced and Jaime replied: ”Nothing else matters. Only us.”

With that, the ceiling collapsed, killing both the Lannisters. As a result, a small bit of foreshadowing, told by Jaime during season five, finally came true.

“I want to die in the arms of the woman I love,” Jaime told Bronn as they headed to Dorne. Although many people thought this could mean Brienne (Gwendoline Christie), we now know that woman was Cersei.

Jaime and Cersei’s death also rubbishes another prophecy. Book fans were led to believe that a Valonqar – which translates from High Valyrian as “little brother” – would kill Cersei. Instead, the ultimate murderer was a thick ceiling coming crashing down.

The Independent‘s critic described “The Bells” as “out-of-tune” and criticised the episode’s writing, asking: “What is the logic here?”

Meanwhile, Varys actor Conleth Hill called his character’s demise “frustrating” and that the “last couple seasons weren’t my favourite”. Lena Headey has also spoken cautiously about her character’s death, revealing the reason why she initially felt “mixed” about the scene.
