Aziz Ansari's BAFTA speech: 'I had to fly to LA from London to accept a f*cking British award'

Master of None star and creator Aziz Ansari has used winning the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy as an opportunity to air his grievances about award shows, in a hilarious 3-minute+ speech (full video below).

"One thing I hate about honours is you can't accept them from home," he told the audience. "This is true - I was in London, and I had to fly to LA from London to accept a fucking British award!

"This is true! I was in London," he repeated, "I met this lovely woman there, we were having a great time drinking flat whites, eating shepherd's pie, riding the tube, and then who comes in and ruins my amazing British experience? The fucking BAFTAs!"

The Britannia Awards are presented by BAFTA Los Angeles as 'a bridge between the Hollywood and British production and entertainment business communities.'

It wasn't only the irony of his journey that Aziz railed at, however, taking aim at the "fucking awful award show food" and joking that John Lithgow was only in attendance because "he probably hates his family and is looking for an excuse to leave the house".

"Then you watch the tribute reel of yourself which the most awkward thing in the world," he continued, "you get mad about the bits they've picked, you imagine people who haven't seen your shit being like, "Really, this guy?!"

With the audience nearly in tears by this point, Aziz concluded: "All that stuff is just jokes, this is really a very nice thing."

Previous winners of the award in recent years include Amy Schumer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Stiller.
