Beyoncé documentary describing 'pain and trauma' of miscarriage airs on BBC

Beyoncé fans will be pleased to know they can start their Easter weekend by watching the singer’s latest documentary tonight on BBC One.

In the documentary, Life is But a Dream, Beyoncé speaks publicly for the first time about the miscarriage she suffered in the months prior to becoming pregnant with her daughter Blue Ivy.

Neither the singer, 31, or her husband Jay-Z, 43, have talked about it in public previously and are known to guard their privacy fiercely.

News of the miscarriage was revealed in the lyrics of a song, “Glory”, by Jay-Z (“Last time the miscarriage was so tragic/We was afraid you'd disappear/But nah baby you magic”) released soon after the birth of Blue Ivy.

Baby Blue Ivy, who has been shielded from public attention since she was born in January 2012, will also feature.

The documentary, directed by Beyoncé, shows the singer’s growing baby bump as well as her ultrasound pictures and a grainy video of her posing nude just days before giving birth.

Life is But a Dream also addresses rumours that circulated widely prior to Blue Ivy's birth that Beyoncé was faking her pregnancy. The singer called them “the most ridiculous rumours I've ever heard of me.”

She continues: “To think that I'd be that vain ... especially after losing a child. The pain and trauma from that just makes it mean so much more to get an opportunity to bring life into the world,” she said.

Beyoncé describes the miscarriage as “the saddest thing I've ever been through”, adding: “My life is a journey. ... I had to go through my miscarriage, I believe I had to go through owning my company and managing myself ... ultimately your independence comes from knowing who you are and you being happy with yourself.”
