Bridgerton fans have voiced their support for actor Rege-Jean Page to become the next James Bond.

Page, who stars as the Duke of Hastings Simon Basset in Netflix’s new period drama, has won audiences over, with many viewers calling for the 31-year-old actor to replace Daniel Craig as 007.

“I binged watched the whole series in one day! Spell bound! Rege-Jean Page would make an excellent James Bond!” said one Twitter user, while another fan added: “If @regejean isn’t the next James Bond I’m going to cry.”

A third wrote: “I realise saying this about any British actor is the thing to do but I could see Bridgerton’s Rege-Jean Page as James Bond.” Another fan of the show chimed in: “Surely the next James Bond is @RegeJean. He has the sophistication, suave looks and the playfulness in his twinkly eyes.”

The actor appears to have preempted the speculation in a Twitter post he shared nine days before the series was released on Christmas Day.

On Twitter, Page shared a video of himself in costume as the Duke, accompanied by a caption reading: “Regency, royalty. Shaken and stirred” – a play on the spy’s famous catchphrase.

Fans have responded to the post, which has since received over 13,000 likes, with support for the potential casting.

One user commented: “From the get-go, I just knew that you now have to be the next James Bond. No one else comes close.” Another wrote: “OMG he would be the perfect 007!”

According to Metro, the new speculation has put Page’s odds for becoming the next Bond at 16/1 – making the actor more likely to be cast in the role as  Marvel star Chris Hemsworth, and equally as likely as Michael Fassbender.

Tom Hardy and Idris Elba are the current favourites to take over the coveted part.

Craig will make his final outing as Bond in the forthcoming No Time to Die, which is scheduled for release in April later this year.
