Ofcom has dismissed over 200 complaints about a male rape storyline on Coronation Street.

The ITV soap recently featured a storyline where the character Josh drug David’s drink, leading the hairdresser to the bedroom and assaulting him.

While viewers were not shown the attack, a total of 183 people complained about the episode, which aired 16 March.

A further 31 people complained about the following three days of episodes which dealt with the fallout from the incident.

An Ofcom spokesperson said: “This storyline tackled a sensitive and challenging subject, which we appreciate was uncomfortable viewing for some.

“However, we considered that ITV took extensive steps to ensure it was handled sensitively and carefully.

“These included working closely with a victim support group, and repeatedly signposting the help available to anyone affected by sexual violence.

“We also considered that, although the offender’s violent intentions were clearly implied, the scenes were neither explicit nor graphic. Finally, we took into account that clear warnings were broadcast before both episodes.”

The aftermath of the incident is still being felt on Coronation Street, with David – played by Jack P. Shepherd – struggling with mental health and took part in a charity boxing match. The soap continues on ITV at 7.30pm tomorrow.
