The cast of Dawson's Creek has reunited for the first time in 20 years.

In honour of the teen soap's 20th anniversary, the cast - James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams, Busy Phllips, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe and Mary Beth Peil - came together for this week's issue of EW.

The cast did an iconic photo shoot - one including best friends Michelle Williams and Busy Phillips embracing each other - and a roundtable to commemorate the occasion.

When the show premiered in 1998, it gained a cult-following for the love triangles and teen drama that emerged from the friendships of Dawson Leery (Van Der Beek), Joey Potter (Holmes), Jen Lindley (Williams) and Pacey Witter (Jackson).

In an interview with PeopleTV, Van Der Beek said, "That's been the coolest thing to see the resonance that it held with people."

"I remember loving the script," Van Der Beek added. "I remember thinking, 'Everybody's amazing, and all the actors were perfectly cast ... We didn't have any expectation it was going to blow up in the way that it did."

Holmes recalled how she was still a high school student in Ohio when she landed the part of Joey, and Williams discussed how her mother still remembered Jen's death.

"I was saying to my mom, 'I'm on my way to a reunion.'" She said, 'But you can't do that. You're dead,'" Williams chided.

The cast even addressed the possibility of a reunion and what that would need to look like if it did happen.

"It would have to be a reinvention of sorts," said Van Der Beek.

Holmes jumps in saying, "What I love about this show is that it existed at a time pre-social media, pre-internet, and it was nostalgic when we were shooting it. So I really like it where it is, to be honest."

Dawson's Creek ran for six seasons and left the WB in 2003.

You can see a collection of photos from the shoot on EW.
