Doctor Who series 11 - trailer

Midway through the World Cup final, the BBC released the first trailer for Jodie Whittaker’s take on Doctor Who, featuring all the Time Lord’s upcoming companions (no longer called companions but ‘friends’).

Totalling just 40 seconds, the clip started with Ryan - played by Hollywoaks alumni Tosin Cole - watching the BBC’s football coverage on a mobile phone when a light passes by, reinvigorating his Full English.

Up next, we have Yasmin, played by Mandip Gill (also of Hollyoaks fame). She happens to be watching Gary Lineker talk football when the light passes by, magically making a pizza appear.

Then, there’s Bradley Walsh (yes, The Chase’s Bradley Walsh) reading the paper. The light then passes by his character, Graham, transforming the paper into the Beano.

Low and behold, that mysterious, magical and transformative light was the Doctor, Whittaker’s thirteenth Doctor emerging and smiling at the clip’s conclusion. Watch the clip above.

So, what did we learn, other than what the characters look like? Well, not a whole lot really, apart from the obvious metaphor of the Doctor improving these three characters lives somehow.

Production on the series has remained tightly guarded. There’s not even a release date for the series available yet – although is expected to start around September time.

A couple of things we do know. First, that there are only going to be 10 episodes, rather than the normal 12. Second, Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch) will act as showrunner, taking over from Steven Moffat.

Last, but not least, a clip from the show recently leaked online, revealing much more than the above trailer. The BBC are now heading to court to bring down the person who leaked the clip – so probably not worth watching online anytime soon.
