Florida shooting: Jimmy Kimmel gets emotional during monologue, calls on Donald Trump to 'do something'

'You still haven’t done anything about this'

During the opening monologue of his late night show, Jimmy Kimmel addressed the deadly Florida school shooting that killed 17 people and left dozens more in hospital.

“This is another very sad day in America,” the host said, fighting back the tears. “Another senseless shooting. This time at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

“A gunman opened fire and 17 lives were lost, more than a dozen have been hospitalised. The President, as he should, has weighed in from the White House.”

Kimmel played a clip of Donald Trump discussing the shooting, perpetrated by a former student who used an AR-15 rifle an multiple magazines.

Addressing the shooting, the President said that no child or teacher should ever be in danger while at school, adding: ”No parent should ever have to fear for their sons and daughters when they kiss them goodbye in the morning”.

“I agree with both of those statements,” Kimmel said in response. “So here’s what you do to fix that. Tell your buddies in Congress, tell Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, all the family men who care so much about their communities, that what we need are laws, real laws, that do everything possible to keep assault rifles out of the hands of people who are going to shoot our kids. Go on TV and tell them to do that.”

Kimmel then turned one of Trump’s phrases — “drain the swamp against him” — against him before getting very emotional, almost to the point of breaking down.

”Children are being murdered,” he said, his voice breaking. “Do something. We still haven’t talked about it. You still haven’t done anything about this. Nothing. You’ve literally done nothing.” See the full segment below.
