The stars of Friends have reportedly reached an agreement with Warner Bros to reunite for an hour-long special on HBO Max.

Cast members Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry will each be paid in the $3m-$4m (£2.3m-£3m) range for appearing in the special, according to Deadline. The total amount spent on talent is said to be around $20m (£15.4m).

Original Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane are expected to have some involvement.

Speculation that a Friends reunion was in the works was reignited on 5 February after Matthew Perry tweeted: “Big news coming”.

Friends fans have long been demanding a reunion. In response to Perry’s tweet, one fan wrote: “Reunion??? Its 2020 and everyone including Emma has woken up from their nap!!!”

Another pleaded: “Don’t play with my feelings like this.”

The suspicion that Friends might return to screens began last October when Jennifer Aniston Instagrammed a photo with the rest of her costars enjoying dinner.

Later in the month, Aniston told The Ellen Show that she was “working on something” with her former Friends cast members.

Then in December, Aniston stoked up yet more speculation after insisting to People magazine that though she knows “nothing” about the production of a reboot, she and the rest of the cast are trying to make it happen: “And I will just continue with… we’re trying.”

The actor continued: “It’s a never-ending question, isn’t it? What else could make a group of six actors feel more proud?

“It’s bringing people joy on a daily basis.”

Matthew Perry recently became the final Friends star to join Instagram.
