Game of Thrones season 7 episode 7 finale: That ending explained

*This post contains major spoilers for Game of Thrones season 7 episode 7 - 'The Dragon and the Wolf'*

Game of Thrones season 7 ended in dramatic, ominous fashion tonight as, after approximately 8,000 years, the Wall was brought down by the Night King.

He did it by harnessing the wight version of Viserion the dragon he raised from the dead, rendering that whole wight expedition Jon and co. went on beyond the Wall even more foolish in retrospect.

The White Walkers hadn't managed to breach the Wall before, apparently due to it being imbued with magic that prevented them from crossing into the south.

Said magic apparently didn't cover dragon flame though, with the wight dragon tearing through the Wall with jets of blue flame. Tormund and the Night's Watchmen at Eastwatch could only look on, aghast.

The ending suggests that the climactic battle between Westeros' living and dead expected in season 8 will now take place south of the Wall, the White Walkers likely to make it as far as Winterfell in the final season and, if they hurry up a bit, possibly down to King's Landing, the seat of power.

Elsewhere in the episode, Jon and Daenerys got down to it, there was comeuppance for Littlefinger and we learned Jon's real name.
