Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 2 Preview

Jon Snow finally knows something on Game of Thrones.

During the season eight premiere, the brooding son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark learnt of his true parentage. Towards the end of the episode, Samwell Tarly – spurred on by Bran-not-Bran Stark – told Jon his real name Aegon Targaryen (read about the name’s significance here).

That, unfortunately, means that Jon and his new lover/queen Daenerys Targaryen are related and he has a better claim to the Iron Throne than her.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kit Harington broke down his character’s thoughts about the revelation, calling it “the most upsetting thing in the world” for Jon.

“If Jon could go back in time and say: ‘Whatever you’re about to say, don’t tell me,’ he would,” Harington said. “He’d happily be in ignorance.”

Quizzed about Jon being told about his claim to the Iron Throne, Harington said: “That’s the thing I love about Jon, his purity. He doesn’t f**king want it. He doesn’t want that f**king information. He doesn’t want to know. He has no ambition for the throne. He’s never wanted that.

“The end of the world might be coming soon but at least he’s in love with somebody and knows who he is, and then comes this sledgehammer.”

Jon Bradley, who plays Samwell, was also on hand to discuss the moment, saying: “Jon feels Sam is muddying the name of one to the most noble people he’s ever known and that his entire life is built on a lie.

“He didn’t take it well. But coming from anybody other than Sam, he would have taken it worse.”

Elsewhere, the reunion-heavy episode featured a hilarious reference to last season’s controversial Ed Sheeran cameo as well as a terrifying death at the hands of the Night King.

The final season of Game of Thrones continues every Sunday. You can watch the trailer for season two here.

The show will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
