The fifth series of Game of Thrones will take fans on a journey into the past.

The hit HBO series is to include flashback scenes when it returns to our TV screens next year, according to Entertainment Weekly.

David Benioff and Dan Weiss made the announcement in a question and answer session with film students in Spain, saying that they had so far avoided using the technique but had now decided to break with the protocol.

Former series have already featured dream and prophecy scenes.

It is believed that one of the flashbacks will occur as the opening scene of the new series and there has been speculation that it will explore Cersei Lannister’s childhood.

Filming for the new series, which is based on George RR Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels, is currently underway at the Alcázar Palace in Seville, before moving to the Spanish town of Osusna.

Nine new characters are set to join the cast, including James Bond actor Jonathan Pryce.
