The Great British Bake Off’s Tamal Ray has revealed that he is gay after being inundated with amorous offers from female viewers on Twitter.

When asked by the Radio Times whether he was available, Tamal replied: “I wouldn't have a girlfriend, I would have a boyfriend."

To the delight of many gay men around the country, he added however: ”But I am single at the moment.”

Asked whether he had noticed the ardent fanbase he has attracted during the latest season of the BBC show, he said: “Yes, I have had a few offers on Twitter!”

Tamal, a senior house officer at an intensive care unit, has been screen grabbed endlessly on social media, where viewers have joked he should be declared “star bae-ker” each and every week.

He also said during the interview that Bake Off has made him very popular in the workplace.

"It's a great icebreaker," he said. "In the morning I see my patients on that day's operating list, and talking about Bake Off helps with the tension a bit."
