Golden Globes 2018: Aziz Ansari becomes first man of Asian descent to win Best Actor in a TV comedy

“I genuinely didn’t think I was going to win because all of the websites said I was going to lose,” Aziz Ansari said onstage at the Golden Globes.

How little did he know. Not only did he win Best TV Actor – Comedy or Musical for his performance in Master of None, he became the first actor of Asian descent to do so, marking one of multiple historic wins at this year’s ceremony.

“Losing two of these in a row – it would have been a sh*t moment for me!” he added jokingly, with his comment swiftly censored for TV broadcast, of course.

Master of None sees Ansari play Dev Shah, a struggling 30-year-old actor whose greatest achievement so far is a yoghurt commercial, as he pursues romantic, professional, and cultural experiences across New York City and, in season 2, Italy.

This is Us star Sterling K. Brown also became the first black actor ever to win in the Best Actor – TV Drama category, responding to the news: “I feel a tremendous sense of pride”.

“To finally be the first of something is really interesting because I never considered myself to be a trailblazer,” he told press backstage. “I just try to stand in my truth all the time and if I come from a place of truth, that’s all I can do. I can’t worry about trying to be Jackie Robinson or anything else, but I’m honored.”

Oprah Winfrey became the first black woman to win the esteemed Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. "For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men," Winfrey said in her powerful acceptance speech. "But their time is up. Their time is up. Their time is up."
