Hana Kimura died after becoming a victim of cyber-bullying, it has been reported.

The professional wrestler, who was part of the cast of popular Japanese reality series Terrace House, died aged 22 last week.

She was reportedly found dead at her home. The cause of her death has not yet been confirmed.

Kimura had recently posted messages on social media that appeared to say goodbye to her fans. Her death has prompted widespread anger at the cyberbullying epidemic.

Yukio Hatoyama, Japan’s former prime minister, tweeted about Kimura’s death and said Japan should consider penalties for those who harass individuals online.

Local media said that Kimura’s death followed bullying over her behaviour on the show, which was broadcast on the country’s Fuji Television as well as on Netflix.

Kimura was a fan favourite on the show, and had a shy personality despite her outgoing persona in the ring.

World Wonder Ring Stardom, a women’s wrestling league in Japan, issued a statement that urged people to “be respectful” and “allow some time for things to process”.

Kimura’s last post on Instagram was a picture of herself and a cat with the message: “I love you, have a long, happy life. I’m sorry.”

Su Yung, an American wrestler, wrote: “I will always love and miss you, my friend. You are my little sister.”

“Distraught,” wrestler Jamie Hayter wrote. “I don’t even know what to say or feel. Numb. I can’t express it.”
